Recreation Commission Minutes 11/05/07
Grafton Recreation Commission

Meeting Minutes
November 5, 2007

CALL TO ORDER - The meeting was called to order at 7:35 p.m. by Chairman Bob Fitzpatrick.  Members present were Marie Dow (arrived at 8:00 p.m.), Kristen Belanger, Heather Cargill, and Stephen Crowley.  Betty Wright, Recreation Coordinator, was also present.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES - Motion by Heather Cargill, seconded by Stephen Crowley, to accept the minutes of the October 1, 2007 meeting as presented.  Motion carried 4-0.

APPROVAL OF BILLS - The bills were reviewed.

Betty Wright left the meeting at 7:45 p.m. at the request of the Grafton Economic Development Commission to join their meeting and discuss Grafton Celebrates the Holidays.  She returned to the meeting at approximately 8:15 p.m.

GRAFTON CELEBRATES THE HOLIDAYS

Betty is requesting help from the Commissioners for Grafton Celebrates the Holidays scheduled for Sunday, December 2.  Bob “volunteered” to be Santa Claus.  Betty noted that donations are low; the petting zoo will be in North Grafton; the horses will be at the Grafton Community Barn; the ice sculpture will be on the Common; there are no carolers; the High School will be holding their winter concert on the same date.

OLD BUSINESS

Turkey Hunt - The turkey hunt is scheduled for Saturday, November 17 beginning at 10:00 a.m. beginning at the Common.  Betty will be having the CERT team help at each location, and is requesting help from the Commissioners in the morning to set out the clues.  Kristin and Steve can help; Heather and Bob will help if needed.

CORRESPONDENCE REVIEW

There was a request from the Selectmen’s Office to designate a Commissioner to serve on the Municipal Wide Space Needs Committee.  Steve Crowley volunteered to serve on that committee.

NEW BUSINESS

Light Bills - There was a discussion on the increase in the light bill.  Betty is considering asking for help paying for the light because it is used for the skateboard park, Pop Warner football, and other groups practicing in the field.  The Commissioners felt that the bill was only high for one or two months, so it could continue to be paid by Recreation.

Ski Programs - Ski sign-ups are in progress.

Haunted Forest Trip - The haunted forest trip was successful with approximately 70 students attending.  A middle school teacher was one of the chaperones and she suggested having two teachers as chaperones, one for each bus, as the children were a bit rowdy on the bus with parent chaperones only.

Heather Cargill received a comment from a parent whose child attending swimming lessons in 2006.  The child was being ridiculed by the beach staff because she was overweight.

Betty will ask Barry Holmes if he is interested in installing an ice skating rink at Airport Park.

A discussion regarding signage for various parks was held.  The Commissioners felt signs were needed not only to direct out-of-towners to various fields/parks, but also “no golf - no dogs - police take notice” signs were needed.  Bob will mention this to the Fields Coalition Committee as it was the consensus of the Commissioners that it really wasn’t their responsibility.

Youth basketball assessments have begun; pee wee soccer has two weeks remaining, which will be at the Middle School due to the colder weather; dodge ball has been a huge success; and peewee basketball will begin in January.

Betty mentioned that due to recent vandalism, the Town Administrator will have the building locked every night at 4:30 p.m. and will unlock the back door only at 6:00 p.m. for meetings.

Next meeting scheduled for Monday, December 3, 2007 at 7:30 p.m.

Motion by Stephen Crowley, seconded by Heather Cargill to adjourn the meeting.  Motion carried 5-0.  Meeting adjourned at 8:45 p.m.
